How To Overcome The Agonising Power Of Perfectionism

Ugh… perfectionism.

It can make you want to bang your head against the wall.

I’m sure you can relate.

You’re bopping along through life, trying to create some solid momentum and produce some tangible outcomes in your work.

Then perfectionism comes in to break us down, like rust quietly growing under the bonnet of a flashy red hot rod.

It’s that voice in our head – the intimidating Gatekeeper who exclaims “Thou shall not pass!”  …until every single detail is in order and in the most immaculate state possible.

In case you haven’t already figured it out by now, nothing you can do will ever appease the Gatekeeper.

Its whole purpose is to stop you from crossing.

Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be our best. Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth; it’s a shield.

What a powerful idea.

Perfectionism as a 20 – tonne shield… truth be told, I can definitely relate to that.

We were brought up in a conditional world, taught from a young age that we have to do things ‘right’ to get the love, acknowledgement and rewards of being a ‘good girl or boy’.

Want to know my ugly truth?

I shudder to think how many projects I discarded due to this ‘20 – tonne shield’.

Honestly, I thought that unless my offerings were fully formed and 100% polished, then essentially what I had to contribute was worthless.

It meant I would look stupid to others, then promptly ridiculed, tortured and expelled from the herd.

Guess what?

This year, I faced that fear head-on.

Building an online business – when you have never owned one before.

Now THAT has made me come face to face with my own perfectionism.

My real motivation was always to get past the fear of sticking my neck out, despite what others think. To do something unique that is fulfilling to me, whilst helping others at the same time.

I wanted life to feel like an adventure – rather than a prison.

Perfectionism was a gaol cell that I locked myself in to keep me safe from the world.

The result? I spent 34 years of my existence feeling like I had never fully lived.

I figured out how to overcome the agonising power of perfectionism – by facing it, head-on.

That requires courage.

Be honest – is perfectionism crippling you from doing the things you’ve always wanted to do?

Is it screaming, “Thou shalt not pass!”?

I am a stand for you to live your best life – and to live it courageously.

If you need a safe place to land – I am here.
